PHILADELPHIA - Playing at Meiklejohn Stadium for the first time in 10 days, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team lost to La Salle, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon.

Penn (13-14) scored the games first run in the third inning as Alex Nwaka drew a lead off walk and came around to score on a wild pitch. The Quakers lead did not last long as La Salle (11-16) answered back with two runs in the fourth. John Rickards singled down the left field line with one out. Davis Hewett followed with a double to left that scored Rickards. Penn gave the Explorers their next run when Hewett strayed off of second and found himself caught halfway between second and third. When he made his way for third, Josh Corn’s throw skipped into left field, allowing Hewett to score. The Quakers evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom half on an RBI single by Corn.

The Explorers added on to their lead in the fifth as R.J. Hollinshead was hit by a pitch to start the inning by new reliever Bret Wallace (0-1) and came around to score on a past ball. Wallace was pulled for Andy Console after the passed ball. Console got the first batter he faced to ground out, but the next batter, Rich Prall, yanked a home run that stayed just inside the right field foul pole to put La Salle on top, 5-2.

Penn made it a 5-3 game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by William Gordon that brought in Jarron Smith. La Salle added an insurance run in the eighth when pinch-hitter John Malloy lined a single to left.

Gerard Breslin pitched the ninth and nailed down his fourth save of the season.

Penn returns to Ivy League Gehrig Division play this weekend when they travel to first-place Cornell. First pitch for Saturday and Sunday’s doubleheaders is slated for noon.
